The Poulan Pro 960420174 PB24VA54 Kohler V-Twin 24 HP Pedal Control Fast Auto Drive Cutting Deck Riding Mower, as with most of the Poulan branded products, is not the cheapest but it is excellent quality. This well renowned brand have managed to combine excellent power (an engine that gives an impressive 24 Horsepower), comfortable seating and ease of maneuvering. This along with the fact this riding mower is one of the best looking ones we have ever reviewed certainly makes it a product worth considering. The smooth black finish really does make it look pretty mean and manly, something that many of you out there will love I’m sure. The seat comfort and handling are really what sets it apart from some of the cheaper models though for sure.

The other big selling point of this mower when compared to many others within this price range is the 54 inch cutting deck. This is obviously quite a lot larger/wider than other models and thus provides a much wider cutting range and also a quicker cutting time. This is especially useful if you are going to be using the tractor/mower to be cutting large expanses of grass. The greasable mandrels also really help to keep the blades functioning well, even after hours of usage. One thing to note is you will probably need to grease the mandrels before using for the first time for best results from the off. What’s great?

The Kohler engine (which is used on a number of different mowers/tractors) gives excellent performance and a good quality 24 horsepower. This is plenty for most garden sizes.

The pedal operated transmission is very easy to use and gives a nice smooth ride, even if you are new to garden mowers you should have now problem.

At 54 inches the Poulan Pro has one of the largest cutting decks available in this price range and is a great plus point. The reinforced cutting deck also comes with a 10 year warranty, longer than most of its competitors and a great comfort for any buyer.

The large 2.5 gallon fuel tank helps to provide great distance/usage before running out of fuel. Although this is pretty standard with most mowers if this quality it’s good to not have to keep topping up the fuel every few hours. .
Large wheels/tires both at the front and at the rear of the vehicle help to give a smooth and stable ride, even on rougher terrain. The tires are noticeably bigger than some of the cheaper models and thus provide a better ride.

The over-sized cutting deck really does reduce your mowing time. Whether you have many acres or just an acre or two this can be a great help. Time is always precious. This is especially useful for those of you with large open spaces to maintain. The large cutting deck really comes into its own.

Despite the large cutting deck the turning circle is excellent on this model. A great help when navigating tight corners or around obstacles.

What’s not so great?

Unfortunately, as we have found with a number of different mowers, the fuel gauge/level is poorly visible and thus difficult to know when you are running low on gasoline. This is really annoying and means you have to be super careful not to run out of fuel miles from the nearest gas supply.

Frustratingly, there is no cutting capability while traveling in reverse. This is now actually the law in many states so we can’t really blame Poulan, but it is still rather annoying to say the least. This isn’t really a deal breaker of course.

Reverse MAX speed on this model is a little slower than some of its competitors at just 1.7MPH. Most of you won’t require super-fast speeds in reverse so again not a deal breaker but we found it a little frustrating.

Conclusion

As you will probably have judged yourself if you have read this far, we do not have much bad to say about this delightful machine. The Poulan Pro 960420174 PB24VA54 Kohler V-Twin 24 HP has a great deal of complimentary attributes for its price range of around $3000. Our favorites without a doubt though are the excellent comfort while driving, the ergonomically designed steering wheel, small turning circle and the over-sized cutting deck at 54 inches. There are not too many alternatives that can provide this quality of ride for the price. However, we did find the fuel gauge issue and the slow reverse speed a little annoying and they were really the only features that brought this model from Poulan down a little.

However, if you are in the market for a good quality (and great looking) riding mower in the $3000 range we would certainly recommend the Poulan Pro 960420174 PB24VA54 Kohler V-Twin 24 HP. The big selling point for us is the 10 year warranty that you will get on the cutting deck, make sure you sign up and secure this properly post making your purchase as it really helps to give you peace of mind while out there mowing.
